Jackson 9.19.13You’ll want to stay comfortable in your own home no matter the weather outside. Quality air solutions are not the only ways to improve the feel of your air this coming fall and winter. Adjusting the “air balance” of the house could help to maintain optimal temperature from winter to summer.

Air balancing is the process of adjusting the HVAC system of your house to make sure that proper airflow is distributed to each room. Allowing your house to achieve better air balance enables your heating and cooling system to perform far more effectively.

Start by opening wide all the vents and interior doors in your house, setting the thermostat so your heating or cooling equipment runs throughout the process. Then, walk around and feel the temperature of each room. Follow the below guidelines to optimize the comfort of each area.

To Stay Warm:
Partially close off vents in warmer rooms, such as kitchens, which typically experience warmer temperatures from cooking. Upstairs keep the vents also slightly closed to help funnel more warmth into the cooler rooms.

To Keep Cool:
Partially close off vents in cool rooms to help more air flow to the warm areas of the house. Proper window coverings will help to maintain comfortable temperatures, protecting south- and west-facing windows in particular. Don’t close off unused rooms, as this can constrict airflow, but experiment with subtle alterations in vent openings to maximize the coolness.

Small changes to your venting system can gradually result in a more substantial change and improved comfort in your home. But if more help is needed, our air duct system experts can help air balance your home even more.

With the venting changes in place, adjust your thermostat to your desired temperature and give the system time to balance. Programmable thermostats allow you to save money and energy by advance setting of desired temperatures at certain times.
